Progress of the construction of DEW has been hampered and delayed, which has been particularly frustrating for residents and authorities. However, 2018 has been full of positive developments, as road work within Gurgaon is almost complete with issues plaguing the road work now at bay. Hence, a series of supporting infrastructure developments are being undertaken with the aim of augmenting the scope of Dwarka Expressway.

New Enhancements to DEW

Once the DEW was given the status of a national highway, the NHAI – the authority now responsible for development of DEW – plans to construct the 23 km of the expressway into an elevated road under the Bharatmala Highway Project. This rapid transit elevated stretch of the Dwarka Expressway will come up in five packages at an estimated expenditure of Rs. 7500 Cr. These five packages will connect different locations along the expressway as follows:

  • Package 1 from Shiv Murti to RuB – 5.3 km
  • Package 2 from RuB to Haryana border – 4.2 km
  • Package 3 from Haryana border to Basai Rail over Bridge (RoB) – 10.2 km
  • Package 4 from Basai RoB to NH-8-SPR intersection – 8.77 km
  • Package 5 from connectivity to Western Airport from DEW via tunnel – 5 km

The stretch from Shiv Murti to RuB will be 

Additional enhancements to the elevated expressway include an eight lane tunnel from Shiv Murti to RuB (Package 1) as well as eight-lanes for the stretch of package 4 from Basai RoB to NH-8’s SPR intersection. Under this stretch, which will take approximately two years to be completed, there will also be additional Rail over Bridges, five vehicle underpasses, six bus bays and a bus shelter.

The most ambitious stretch of the new elevated Dwarka Expressway, however, will be the tunnel linking it to the IGI Airport which will completely bypass NH-8. This includes an underpass and 2 tunnels – one from South Delhi at Shiv Murti and the other from the DEW – which will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 1350 crore and will take up to 3 years to be completed. Once completed, though, it will offer exceptional, hassle-free transit to and from the airport as well as connectivity from Gurgaon via DEW to Delhi.

Additional Infrastructure Developments

  • The DEW is expected to witness heavy flow of traffic between Gurgaon and Delhi. To manage this, the NHAI has decided to build a trumpet junction between NH-8 and DEW. This will be integrated with a cloverleaf at the CPR & NH8 junction connecting CPR to SPR and thus, cut down travel time to South Delhi.
  • The Daulatabad Flyover will be converted into a four lane road which will decongest traffic and facilitate efficient movement of traffic. Simultaneously, the service lanes along this stretch will be widened.
  • Hero Honda Chowk will be revamped and upgraded to six lanes thus providing better connectivity to the DEW from NH-8.
  • The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has proposed a Metro route which will connect Huda City Centre to Dwarka Sector 21. This is expected to be a major boon for the daily commuters while connecting several major points such as Subhash Chowk on Sohna Road, Hero Honda Chowk, ESI Hospital and numerous neighbouring sectors.
  • A tunnel network will provide unparalleled connectivity to Aerocity and Terminal 3 from Sector 25 Dwarka junction via the northern access road.
  • NHAI is also planning to add a tram or light rail transport system along the Urban Extension Road-II (UER 2), which will connect NH-1, NH-10 and NH-8, and the upcoming Dwarka Expressway. This is expected to offer a cleaner and faster mode of transport, besides augmenting the existing infrastructure.

These infrastructure upgrades and developments are expected to ease residents’ daily life while also improving connectivity in and around Gurgaon as well as to nearby commercial hubs. Moreover, these developments will certainly boost the already appreciating property values in Gurgaon.

Upcoming Social Infrastructure Developments

Sector 104, the location of Hero Homes’ new residential development, is close to some long awaited infrastructural and social developments planned in nearby Dwarka. The development will also include development of allied infrastructure such as hotels, offices and retail space.
  • An 18.2 acre international standard multi-game Sports Complex will be developed in Najafgarh in two phases. This will include FIFA approved football stadium, cricket stadium, facilities for athletics, tennis, basketball and swimming as well as a sports academy and residential facilities.
  • A metro line has been proposed to extend the current line and connect Dwarka to the Convention Centre.

The completion of Dwarka Expressway is a major boost to not just connectivity but also quality of life for residents of Gurgaon. Before the DEW, for almost two decades, development in Gurgaon was very haphazard and without focus.
