Sion also known as Sheev meaning boundary in Marathi, earlier marked the boundary between Mumbai and Salsette Island (one of the erstwhile seven islands of Mumbai). Mumbai as we know it now didn’t exist then. The British named it as Sion marking the end of the city. The name remained even after Mumbai was joined to the Salsette island and extended up to Mulund.

Sion also has a historical significance as it is home to Sion Fort which is situated on a hill within a nondescript garden in the middle of this bustling suburb, that you would normally pass by without noticing. But in the 18th century, Sion Fort was one of the most strategically located forts for the island of Bombay which was separated from the “mainland” island of Salsette and was used to guard the only point of entry into Bombay – the Sion Causeway which earlier connected Sion in Mumbai to Kurla in Salsette. Monorail and railway routes are also available. The second phase of monorail connects GTB to ten other stations in the south-east part. King Circle and GTB are the nearest railway stations offering access to western as well as harbour line respectively, in addition to Sion railway station which falls under the central line. BKC which is at distance of 5.4 kms from Sion will be looking to inaugurate the first ever Bullet train in 2022 starting from BKC itself  and extending upto Ahmedabad.

Prices in Sion for premium housing projects have been ranging from Rs. 22,500 to Rs. 27500, mid-market project prices ascend from Rs. 17,500 to Rs. 21,200 whereas the affordable segment ranges from Rs. 12,600 to Rs. 15,212, as observed in Jan-Dec 2017.

For leisure activities, one can also visit the Sion fort or Maheshwari Udyan in Matunga which is not more than a 10 min drive. Shanmukhanand Hall which is nearby promotes fine arts and hosts a variety of shows.
