History of Hoodi

The history of Hoodi in linked with Whitefield which was established in the late 1800s as a settlement for the Eurasians and Anglo Indians of Bangalore. Till then, there were no other surrounding places like Hoodi, ITPL, Kadugodi, Brookfield, etc. In the first decade of the 1900s, there were about 45 houses, 18 were on the village site and the remainder were on farms throughout the settlement and contained about 2000 acres of land for cultivation. The number of residents in 1907 was 130. Until the late 1990s, Whitefield was a small village. Since then, particularly as Bangalore’s stock as the ‘Silicon Valley of India’ grew, it has become a major hub for the Indian technology industry. The Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP) at Whitefield is one of India’s first information technology parks – International Tech Park, Bangalore (ITPB) which houses offices of many IT and ITeS companies. This resulted in the emergence of peripheral towns such as Hoodi, Kadugodi and more.

Insights into Location and Neighbourhood

As it is home to Bangalore’s IT hub – Information technology Park Limited (ITPL), Hoodi is an excellent place to live for Whitefield’s students and employees. It is one of the fastest growing locations in Whitefield. The location is well connected with all prominent IT Parks, international schools and biggest shopping malls like Phoenix Market City in
Bangalore and also scores high in social aspects and connectivity. The area is near ITPL in Whitefield and has easy access and connectivity to Outer Ring Road, Mahadevapura, Whitefield, K.R. Puram, and Kundallahalli. It also has easy access to K R Puram Railway station (by road and by Hoodi Halt railway station) and Outer Ring Road to International Airport and well-connected to other parts of the city. During peak hours, there is a lot of traffic in Hoodi Circle due to the high volume of people traveling to and from places like ITPL, Whitefield, Mahadevapura, Kundalahalli, Krishnarajapuram, and Brookfield.

There are two major four-lane roads which connect Bangalore with Hoodi. These are Whitefield Road via Mahadevapura and Varthur Road via Marathahalli. Both these roads intersect with SH 35 which runs north-south. There are many travel options for anyone living in Hoodi.

1. Connectivity through Roads:

Hoodi has extensive bus connectivity with a wide range of services offered by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). A Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC) in Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP) is functional with schedules connecting it with most areas of the city.

On demand from the burgeoning population, the brand new Hoodi railway station was inaugurated in September 2016. Hoodi station (closest station to Hoodi Circle, 5 mins walking distance) is situated between Krishnarajapuram and Whitefield railway stations. This station is small but caters to thousands of local IT and non-IT commuters daily who choose public transport over their personal vehicle to avoid the hours of traffic congestion, pollution, dust and prefer hassle-free traveling. Presently, six pairs of trains, mostly passenger trains stop at Hoodi halt throughout the day. Despite the low-frequency, people use the long distance trains that do halt at Hoodi.

3. Metro Stations:

The Union Cabinet announced that it had approved plans for phase II – Namma Metro project on 30 January 2014 which was much anticipated. Phase II covers a distance of 722.095 km and 13.79 km underground, adds total 61 stations to the network, of which 12 stations are underground. The east end of the Purple Line will be extended from Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield which will be covering 13 stations in between and the west-end from Mysore Road to Kengeri. Both the metro stations – Garudachar Palya (2.4 km) and Doddanekundi Industrial Estate (2.6 km) will be almost at a similar distance from Hoodi Circle. The expected metro work completion date for Mysore Road – Kengeri (Purple Line) is December 2020 and for Baiyappanahalli – Whitefield (Purple Line ) is March 2023.

Infrastructure: After completion of the Prestige Shantiniketan project, Whitefield has become another center for Bangalore city.

This location suffers from water shortages especially during summers as the whole region relies almost entirely on the groundwater. The tremendous demand for housing and office space has been multiplying over the years and has been the main culprit for depleting groundwater stocks.

There is a popular daily local market in Hoodi which is very crowded on weekends. You can buy fresh fruits and vegetables here throughout the day and at much cheaper prices compared to supermarkets. The vendors come from the nearby village.

There are five famous temples in Hoodi – Shiva Temple, Sri Maha Ganapathy Temple, Big tree under the flyover, Sri Lakshmi Narayan Temple and Shri Shirdi Sai.

Amenities: Social Infrastructure: Healthcare, Education, Shopping

Hoodi has all the necessary amenities like schools, colleges, IT parks, malls, movie theaters, restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, etc. within 0.3-15 km.

1. Educational Facilities: The area includes some of the most reputed schools and institutes in the city which are within a 10 km radius. There are schools such as Gopalan National School, Gopalan International School, Euro School, Florence High School, Sri Chaitanya Techno School, Government High School, S.M. English School and The Brigade School (CBSE, ICSE). Higher education institutes include Gopalan College of Engineering and Management, GSAP-Gopalan College of Architecture, CMR National PU College (ITPL), Vydehi Dental College, Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Pragathi PU College and Ujjval Vidyalaya Composite School.

2. Proximity to Workplace: Offices nearby, ITPL (<3 km), Manyata Tech Park (18.2 km), Embassy Golf link, Domlur (14 km), RMZ EcoSpace (9 km). The biggest attraction for the growth of Hoodi is ITPL as many software companies like Oracle, SAP, TCS, IBM, Genisys Group, etc. are at this place.

3. Healthcare Centers: This locality ensures that if someone is looking for investment in a new home in Hoodi Circle, the healthcare options are just around the corner. 5. Restaurants and Hotels: A lot of restaurants and hotels have come up due to the growing educated population. The famous restaurants in the vicinity are Bhagini, Kamat, Dil se Dilli, curefit Whitefield Kitchen, Taste of India Family Restaurant, Coastal Food Court and Keys Cafe.
